By 2015, 70% of Melbourne’s wastewater should be recycled, and the Victorian Government needs to eventually move toward 100%, prohibiting wastewater discharge into the sea or waterways. Groundwater systems need better protection, and water bills should be weighted towards consumption to prompt behavioural change, according to a paper by the state’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee... ETS passes lower house

The Federal Government’s emissions trading bill passed through House of Representatives Thursday, moving next to the Senate where it is widely expected to fail. The passing comes as an account of the country emissions over the past 17 years – prepared for UN climate change convention – showed an overall 82% growth. Coles offering more multiple use checkout bags | |
Grocery retailer Coles will offer re-usable and biodegradable checkout bags in its stores nationwide, from Sept 1, following positive feedback to the ban on lightweight plastic bags in South Australia, and to offer customers “a better range of checkout bags”. The new re-usable heavyweight plastic bag will cost 15 cents and a biodegradable bag, 25 cents... (5 June 2009)

Shares have risen strongly, stopping only to correct themselves on a reminder that it’s NOT ALL OVER. The Australian economic figures helped underpin a market rise reported in today’s AFR as “the biggest three month rally in 50 years”. Can this be sustained?
